15-year-old dies, driver arrested after hit-and-run crash in east valley

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A teenager is dead and a driver is in custody after an alleged hit-and-run crash in the east valley Monday night.

The crash was reported around 8:20 p.m. on Tropicana Avenue just east of Nellis Boulevard, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.

Investigators believe a red 2002 Acura MDX was heading west on Tropicana when it hit a pedestrian who was in a crosswalk, LVMPD said in a statement.

An on-duty Community Ambulance happened to be in the area and witnessed the crash, police say, and the crew immediately stopped to provide medical aid.

The victim, identified as a 15-year-old boy, was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the Acura did not stop at the scene of the crash or call police, according to LVMPD. The SUV was initially described as red or orange and possibly a Chevy Tahoe.

Officers found the Acura a short time after the crash, and the driver, identified as 34-year-old Crystal Helm, surrendered to police.

Helm was booked into Clark County Detention Center, and jail records indicate she faces charges of failure to stop at the scene of a crash and failure to yield.
