Pedestrian safety enhancements added near UNLV, more to come on Boulder Highway

What used to be just a typical crosswalk on Swenson and Naples near UNLV now has flashing yellow lights, crossing signs and pedestrian activated buttons.

It’s the latest safety improvements made by Clark County.

“We've seen people literally play leapfrog. Countless, I can’t even imagine how many times we've seen it,” Otto said.

Right now, on Boulder Highway, safety upgrades are being made.

The Nevada Department of Transportation announced it is spending $1.5 million to make eight target areas safer for pedestrians.

NDOT provided the following information on the improvements:

  • Oakey Boulevard – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, and add a new crosswalk.
  • Boulder Palms Senior Apartment Community, 4350 Boulder Highway – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, plus place a new Danish offset median and add a new crosswalk.
  • Whitney Avenue – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, place a new Danish offset, reconfigure the median and add a new crosswalk.
  • Hamilton Avenue – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, plus place a new Danish offset, make median upgrades and add a new crosswalk.
  • Corn Street – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, place a new Danish offset, make median upgrades and add a new crosswalk.
  • Foster Avenue – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, place a new Danish offset, make median upgrades and add a new crosswalk.
  • Lowery Street – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, place a new Danish offset, make median upgrades and add a new crosswalk.
  • Veterans Affairs Southeast Clinic, 1020 S. Boulder Highway – Install overhead rapid flashing beacons in both directions, with pedestrian crossing warning signs and lights, place a new Danish offset, make median upgrades and add a new crosswalk.

Jimmie Morris says he's seen a lot of crashes in his 30 plus years living in the valley.

"Some people really got hurt -- a couple of deaths," Morris said.

He's looking forward to seeing a difference near UNLV.

"I'm just hoping it will work, you know, because I saw quite a few people get hurt," Morris said.

So is Otto.

“Now, it might be a little bit safer. In my opinion, I think they should actually put actual streets lights -- red, yellow, green -- only because I think that would control it that much better,” Otto said
