Suspected drunk driver hits, kills 65-year-old man and his dog

At approximately 5:10 a.m., a 65-year-old man was walking with a dog and outside of any marked or implied crosswalk on East Kimberly Avenue and South Steptoe Street, near Tropicana Avenue and Boulder Highway. 

Evidence at the scene showed a pedestrian was walking with his dog on the east on the south side of the roadway of E. Kimberly Avenue when they were hit by a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic traveling east on Kimberly Avenue. The pedestrian and the dog were knocked to the roadway where they both sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Sonic, 31-year-old Juan Hernandez, remained at the scene of the collision and called 911. 

Clark County Fire responded to the scene and determined the pedestrian to be deceased. LVMPD traffic officers responded to the scene and determined Hernandez to be exhibiting signs of impairment. The driver was arrested and booked on suspicion of DUI and the results of further testing are still pending. 

This collision marks the 34th traffic-related fatality in the LVMPD jurisdiction for 2019. This collision remains under investigation by the LVMPD Collision Investigation Detail.
